![]() Jeeps bounding through forests and around mountains, as velociraptors scamper close behind. Pterodactyls dropping off players into the heart of the base, armed with nothing but an ax and leather armor. A triceratops smashing through a gate, while auto turrets hopeless plink bullets of the armored head. I can envision rival tribes waging war on one another, one harnessing these massive beasts to their advantage, while the other relies on technology and weapons to bring them down. The duality of technology and dinosaurs could lead to some fascinating dynamics, so long as the AI routines and interactivity is there. With an interesting twist on a new genre, and riding high on the wave of active developer involvement, Beasts of Prey could be one to watch. Rumored to be a team around 8 people, they have been patching the game at a pretty consistent pace with a couple releases every month, and answering questions in the Steam group. All that said, this game should be viewed as being in an Alpha, or eve Pre-Alpha state. Game balance is also a bit rough, as resources can be extremely rare, or trees will only provide a certain amount of logs before being “empty” but with no way to determine that before hitting the tree. Textures and performance are still rough around the edges, bringing my otherwise capable system to a its knees. Some mechanics and equipment is present in the game, but non functional (or becomes inadvertently broken in patches). It is absolutely worth noting that this game is still early on in development - but the small development team has been quite forthcoming. The clash of modern infrastructure and dinosaurs provides for a Jurassic Park-like setting, which is a rather neat twist on the new genre, putting it apart from the competition. ![]() ![]() All the while, you are arming yourself to the teeth with modern day firearms and explosives. Given the vicious prehistoric fauna roaming the world, and perhaps more ruthless players, these more robust defenses can be necessary. Or a sprawling modern-day military base, replete with concrete slabs, radar dish, and watch towers. Whether that be a simple house with a crafting table to make new weapons, furnace to smelt raw ore into metals, and a bed to act as a spawn. With enough raw materials acquired, you then craft a flag to claim territory, upon which you can begin building your base. Cutting some logs from nearby trees, and searching out the sparse above ground ore deposits is the first task at hand. Do I trust this unfamiliar stranger I know nothing about, or cut them down before they can ever pose a threat? Should I band together with fellow players in a tenuous fellowship, or strike it out on my own in a constant state of paranoia?ĭropping you into the world with nothing but a knife, you are ill equipped to handle the hostile environment around you. The openness of the world, and simplicity of the rule set, also encourage a layer of human interaction and psychology. The general premise is that you are controlling a character in first person, exploring a large world with other players, scouring for weapons, technology, and raw resources in an effort to fend for yourself in a hostile setting. Similar in vein to games like DayZ, Rust, The Forest, or 7 Days to Die, Beasts of Prey falls neatly into this emerging genre of games that doesn’t quite have an established name yet. Beasts of Prey is an open world survival multiplayer game, set in a procedurally generated world inhabited by dinosaurs.

But Arq Premium doesn’t support continuous backups, instead relying on scheduled backups, so there’s always a chance it won’t be perfectly up to date. Its restoration process is far less cumbersome than Backblaze’s and speedier than IDrive’s, too. During setup, Arq Premium encourages (but doesn’t require) you to use a private encryption key for a secure backup. The Arq Premium software gives you a lot of control over how your backup works, including options to choose how long to keep files around, to select any external drives, and more. Arq Premium supports up to five computers, and if you need more than the included 1 TB of storage, it’s an additional $0.00599 per gigabyte each month (which amounts to about $6 per terabyte each month, making it more expensive than Backblaze and IDrive for data hoarders). And in 1990, even Domino's Pizza wanted to reach their greasy pepperoni-soaked hand into the video game industry. They all had "advergames", games designed to indirectly promote a product or service. It was also a time when a ton of video games based on food franchises were released. You remember the 90s, right? Neon shorts, Ace of Base, two Goofy movies. (Forgive me, I couldn't think of another way to end this.I sat down and legitimately tried to play Yo! Noid, and the only thing I can really say about my experience is "Ugh." So what are you waiting for? Don't avoid this Noid: It's way less greasy than a Dominos pizza. And best of all, for a somewhat uncommon game Yo! Noid comes pretty cheap: on eBay right now there's a bunch of loose carts available for about $10. Once you get your head around the boss mechanics, the need to explore the stages and the sort of platforming you need to do after Stage 2, you're set. The only real knock on it is the difficulty curve: Stage 2 (with the furious hockey-playing polar bears) throws you in the deep end out of nowhere, with moving and self-destructing blocks of ice over long stretches of bottomless pits, and then the game sort of sticks to one difficulty until you see the Stage 13 flower pots. ![]() So having finally seen the whole game, do I recommend it? Definitely! The license is ridiculous but the controls are tight, the graphics are bright and expressive, the music is actually better than you'd think (I've got a soft spot for the map screen chime and as much as I hated Stage 13, the music for that level is pretty bad ass) and the gameplay has enough variety to keep anyone entertained. If the other guy eats his fill first, the Noid dies and has to do the stage again. The goal is to match up the cards so that the Noid fills his pizza-eating quota before his rival and advance to the next stage. Green is the last one, but they're all interchangeable and, not that this will come as any surprise, entirely unrelated to the commercials.) Cards each show a value of one to six pizzas, although the Noid can collect a few extra cards like x2 and x3 multipliers, and pepper and red pepper (I think it's hot sauce) to even the odds. (Wikipedia says Yo! Noid was made on the Wagan Land engine, and this part makes that seem believable.) Every two stages or so, the Noid faces off against an identical Noid of a different colour. Where things change is the boss battles, which are played out via card games. (The scrolls and their abilities basically make no sense for a pizza-eating jackass from New York, but when you realize it's a ninja game it makes a lot of sense.) There are a few non-standard stages: the auto-scrolling circus stage, two stages where the Noid has some jet-pack thing and a skateboarding level (which despite the early '90s RAD EXTREME esthetic to this game, appears to be original to the Japanese version.) And so the villain of some corny commercials was now a platforming hero.Īs a platformer Yo! Noid is serviceable but largely unremarkable: you use a yo-yo as a weapon, have a hearty jump and have special weapons that require you to collect scrolls as ammunition. ![]() But!
